They're Repeating across America What They Performed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the US president commenced revealing everyone his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study predicted his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying large sections of the executive mansion to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' to 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to observe the president try to upend the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense about him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching focuses on affection for others, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his crime policy states that when someone steals your coat you ought to provide them your pullover also.

The apparent and straightforward reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a form of profound affection focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Best Among Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the determined opposition to Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities of American history.

We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In both situations does it imply feigning the most negative about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it represents both meekness and belief, a combination that committed national faithful ought to accept.
